Frittering in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
It was the summer I was 9-years-old that I ate one of the best meals of my life! I’m 13-years-old now, but I can remember it like it was yesterday. My grandmother, my mother and I went to Jack Baker’s Lobster Shanty in Cocoa Beach, Fla. It was a beautiful sunset. I remember that, because we waited for a table in the back by the pier where there were a million pelicans, and seagulls all waiting for people to feed them. My mom got me some of the feed from a machine they had there, and I threw it on the pier and then there were squawks and feathers. I remember giggling. I didn’t really want to go to that restaurant because I don’t like seafood AT ALL. And that’s mostly all that they have, but Grammy said I could get a hamburger or chicken fingers, if that’s what I wanted, but I had something even better that I didn’t even expect. I never heard of corn fritters, but every table at Jack Baker’s gets a serving of them. OK, they are more like dessert than a meal or a vegetable, but I couldn’t stop eating them. They’re still warm from the kitchen, and sprinkled with powdered sugar. I ate my portion and my mother’s and grandmother’s and then I asked for more .My grandmother wanted me to eat my hamburger first, but my mother said that it was vacation time, and should be able to eat what I wanted. I got another bowlful. Now, whenever we visit Cocoa Beach, I ask to go to Lobster Shanty.
